Located at Buckieburn, outside Stirling, our freshwater research unit is named in memory of the late Professor Niall Bromage who used the External Facilities at Buckieburn and Machrihanish for much of his ground-breaking research in fish reproduction.

The unit is gravity fed from the nearby Buckieburn reservoir, which provides over two million gallons a day of temperature stable water.  The facility has a total of seventy-four flow-through tanks ranging from 600 to 25000 litres in volume and is ideally suited for research on salmonids, principally Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout.

Our freshwater unit is staffed by experienced personnel who take great pride in the welfare of the stock and the careful conduct of research projects.
